Women Leading the Way in Football at SCSC Women’s Tournament

Held as part of Women’s Day celebrations, the tournament brought together teams from communities including Stellenbosch, Malmesbury, Mbekweni, Kraaifontein and Franschhoek, giving young women an opportunity to compete, showcase their talent and connect through football.

The tournament featured a group-stage competition followed by semi-finals, a third-place playoff and the final, providing a full day of competitive football.

3rd Place: Warriors Soccer Academy – Stellenbosch

For Alive Dyasi, SCSC’s Football for Development Coach, the tournament was about creating opportunities for girls and challenging the limited visibility of women's football at community level.

“In Swartland, ladies’ football is not yet popular, with most attention still focused on boys’ teams. That is exactly why I wanted this tournament to happen. Girls need to know that there is a place for them on the field too.”

Dyasi said bringing teams from different communities together showed the potential of women’s football to unite communities and change perceptions.

“From the first game to the final, I saw passion, respect and real team spirit. The players gave everything, the coaches supported each other, and the supporters brought great energy. It was my first time hosting a ladies’ tournament, and although it was tough work, seeing everyone come together as one football family made it worthwhile.”

Batalions Ladies captain Phelokazi Tyampu said the team entered the tournament determined to represent their club with pride.

“Today we came here to represent our badge. Our coach told us to go all out because the opposing teams were very strong, so we knew we could not take them lightly. We were playing against the wind, which made it extremely difficult, but we pushed through and managed to become the final winners of the tournament.”

Dyasi believes tournaments like this can help give young women greater visibility and inspire them to pursue their sporting ambitions.

“When we host tournaments like this, we are saying that girls across our communities also deserve support, opportunities and a stage to shine.”

The SCSC Women’s Tournament brought together players, coaches, families and supporters, creating an opportunity to celebrate young female footballers while strengthening connections between football communities.

The tournament was supported by SCORE - Changing Lives Through Sport, Hope Through Action and other partners and sponsors.

The organisers hope to build on the tournament by creating more opportunities for young women to participate in football, develop their skills and compete at community level.
