Why 'Winter You' Deserves Just as Much Care as 'Summer You'

For many women, winter brings more than colder temperatures. It often comes with lower energy levels, drier skin, cancelled plans and changing daily routines.

While it's common to feel more active and confident during the warmer months, experts say it's important to recognise that winter naturally affects how people feel, both physically and emotionally.

Research has shown that reduced sunlight during winter can influence mood, energy levels and daily behaviour, while colder weather and lower humidity often leave skin feeling dry and irritated.

Rather than trying to maintain the same pace all year round, wellness experts encourage women to embrace seasonal routines that support their wellbeing.

Claire Bowen, Brand Manager for Shower to Shower, says many women place unnecessary pressure on themselves to feel the same throughout the year.

"Winter changes how we feel physically and emotionally. Rather than fighting it, it can be helpful to embrace a winter version of yourself with habits and routines that support the season," she said.

Five Ways to Embrace Your Winter Routine:

1. Slow down without feeling guilty

Winter often brings lower energy levels. Instead of trying to do everything, focus on building consistent habits that are easier to maintain.

2. Create comforting daily rituals

Whether it's enjoying a warm shower, reading a book, listening to music or lighting a scented candle, small routines can improve your mood and provide a sense of calm.

3. Take care of your skin

Cold weather and indoor heating can dry out the skin. Using gentle cleansers and moisturisers can help keep skin healthy and comfortable throughout winter.

4. Dress for comfort and confidence

Warm clothing doesn't have to mean sacrificing style. Comfortable outfits that make you feel good can boost confidence during the colder months.

5. Stop waiting for summer to feel happy

Instead of seeing winter as something to simply endure, find simple ways to enjoy the season and prioritise your wellbeing.

Embracing Every Season

As Women's Month celebrates the strength and resilience of women across South Africa, it's also an opportunity to remember that self-care doesn't have to be complicated.

Sometimes, the smallest habits, getting enough rest, looking after your skin, slowing down and making time for yourself, can have the biggest impact on your overall wellbeing.
