East London: Nearly a thousand runners are expected to take part in the inaugural ELIDZ–Old Mutual 10km & 5km Road Running Race on Saturday, 4 July, aiming to foster community engagement and promote health, wellness, and active living.
Hosted by the East London Industrial Development Zone (ELIDZ) and organised by Original Mambas Athletics Club, the race will be held within the ELIDZ precinct and is expected to attract participants of all ages and abilities.
Old Mutual and East London IDZ are the co-sponsors of the event, supporting race infrastructure, participant apparel, medals, and prize money, which demonstrates their commitment to community wellbeing and builds trust with local partners.
Beyond the competition itself, the event aims to strengthen community bonds, making residents feel valued and part of a shared goal for healthier living and collective progress.
"The race offers people from across the Eastern Cape the opportunity to come together in a positive environment that promotes healthy lifestyles and community participation," said Vuyisile Koko, Provincial General Manager at Old Mutual.
"We are proud to support an initiative that promotes physical wellbeing while strengthening partnerships between communities, businesses and government."
The race will run alongside a stakeholder breakfast at the ELIDZ precinct, providing an opportunity for investors, business leaders, and provincial stakeholders to strengthen relationships and support regional economic development through community collaboration.
Participants will compete over 10km and 5km distances, with prize money awarded to the leading athletes. Old Mutual business units will also host wellness and customer engagement activations at the finish area.
Vuyisile said initiatives such as this form part of a broader commitment to building stronger, more resilient communities across the province.
"At Old Mutual, we believe thriving economies are built on thriving communities. We also believe that financial wellness is central to our purpose, but we know wellbeing is about more than money. It is also about physical health, mental resilience and strong community connections. That is why we support initiatives like this marathon, which encourage healthy living, bring people together and help build a stronger future for all.
As we work with our partners to support the Eastern Cape's growth as an investment and economic hub, we aim to inspire pride in our communities and motivate continued collaboration for shared prosperity.
"Every initiative that brings communities together and creates pathways for participation contributes to addressing the social and economic challenges, including youth unemployment, that continue to affect our province," he concluded.
