Shoprite Is Expanding Faster Than South Africa’s Other Major Grocers

South Africa's grocery retail battle is becoming increasingly intense, with Shoprite continuing to expand its store network at a rapid pace as retailers compete for customers across the country.

Shoprite's expansion has seen hundreds of new stores added to its network, strengthening the group's position as South Africa's largest food retailer.

In the first 11 months of its 2026 financial year, Shoprite opened 268 stores across its core Supermarkets RSA business, already surpassing its full-year target of 223 stores. The expansion included Shoprite, Checkers, Usave and LiquorShop outlets.

The group's broader expansion has also included newer businesses and formats, reflecting a strategy that goes beyond traditional supermarkets.

Why Shoprite is opening so many stores

Shoprite has been investing heavily in expanding its physical footprint while also strengthening its digital and delivery operations.

The group says its store network provides the infrastructure for its growing omnichannel retail platform, which includes its popular Sixty60 on-demand delivery service.

The retailer's expansion comes as South African consumers continue to prioritise affordability and convenience amid pressure on household budgets.

Shoprite reported that it opened 273 net new stores across the group over the 12 months to December 2025, while its interim results showed sales growth of 7.2% to R136.8 billion for the six months ended December 2025.

The retailer also reported that it served more than 100 million customers per month, highlighting the scale of its operation.

The battle for South African shoppers

Shoprite's rapid expansion comes as Pick n Pay, SPAR and Woolworths also work to strengthen their positions in a highly competitive market.

Pick n Pay's 2026 annual results show that the group had 2,261 stores across its various businesses at the beginning of March 2026, after opening 108 stores during the financial year, although closures and conversions also affected the overall network.

The different retailers operate very different store models, making simple comparisons between store numbers difficult. Shoprite's network includes multiple formats such as Shoprite, Checkers, Usave and LiquorShop, while competitors have their own combinations of supermarkets, convenience stores, liquor outlets and other formats.

What is clear, however, is that the competition for retail space and South African consumers is intensifying.

For shoppers, the expansion means more supermarkets and convenience outlets competing for their business, potentially bringing greater access to promotions, products and services.

For retailers, however, opening hundreds of stores represents a significant investment as they fight to gain market share and remain relevant to increasingly price-conscious consumers.

Shoprite's latest expansion push suggests the country's grocery retail war is far from over.
