SASSA Clarifies Who Qualifies for a Disability Grant in South Africa

South Africans applying for a SASSA Disability Grant need to meet a number of requirements, including medical, financial and residency criteria, as the agency continues to assess applications to ensure that assistance reaches eligible beneficiaries.

The Disability Grant is intended to provide income support to people whose physical or mental disability affects their ability to earn a living.

According to SASSA's current grant information, applicants must generally be 18 to 59 years old, reside in South Africa and undergo a medical or functional assessment confirming their disability. Applicants must also meet the applicable means-test requirements.

The current Department of Social Development information sets the Disability Grant's means-test thresholds at annual income below R87,720 for a single applicant and R175,440 for a married applicant, with applicable asset limits also taken into consideration.
