Pork Prices Drop as South Africa's Market Swings from Shortage to Surplus

South African consumers may soon notice some relief at the checkout as pork prices continue to fall following a dramatic turnaround in the country's pork market.

After months of concern over possible shortages caused by outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) and Foot-and-Mouth Disease (FMD), the market is now experiencing an oversupply, pushing prices down and making pork products more affordable.

According to Eskort CEO Arnold Prinsloo, pork prices have dropped from around R40 per kilogram to approximately R30 per kilogram, reversing earlier price increases that were driven by fears of reduced local supply.

Earlier this year, processors imported pork as a precaution against anticipated shortages after disease outbreaks disrupted production on some local farms. However, the imported meat arrived just as South African farms completed mandatory disease control restrictions and resumed normal production.

"As a result, the market has shifted from concerns about shortages to an oversupply of pork," Prinsloo said.

South Africa's animal health regulations require farms affected by Foot-and-Mouth Disease to remain under restrictions for at least 42 days after no new symptoms are detected. Once restrictions are lifted, many market-ready pigs enter the supply chain at the same time, increasing available stock.

The surplus has also coincided with weaker consumer demand following previous price hikes, placing further downward pressure on prices.

Consumers are already seeing lower prices on some pork products. Eskort says pork chops have dropped from around R120/kg to approximately R80/kg, while boerewors has decreased from about R120/kg to R100/kg. Packs of bacon that previously sold for around R130 are now retailing for approximately R100.

Prinsloo believes prices are likely to stabilise closer to the historical average of around R32 per kilogram as supply and demand gradually return to balance.

While the lower prices are welcome news for consumers, the recent disease outbreaks have highlighted the importance of strong biosecurity measures, veterinary services and ongoing disease surveillance to protect South Africa's livestock industry and ensure long-term food security.

For shoppers looking to stretch their grocery budgets, the current market conditions could offer welcome savings on one of the country's most popular protein sources.
