Nearly 4 in 10 South Africans Expect to Miss Bill or Loan Payments, Study Finds

South Africans continue to face mounting financial pressure, with 39% of consumers expecting to miss at least one bill or loan repayment, according to the latest TransUnion Consumer Pulse Study.

The findings paint a concerning picture of household finances as rising living costs, inflation and weak consumer confidence continue to squeeze monthly budgets.

The study found that nearly four in ten South Africans believe they may struggle to keep up with their financial commitments, highlighting the growing pressure many households face.

Inflation Continues to Bite

According to the report, 79% of respondents ranked rising prices for everyday essentials such as groceries and fuel among their top financial concerns.

Although some households reported improvements in their finances compared to last year, many said their incomes are not keeping pace with the rising cost of living.

Only 37% of consumers believe their income is keeping up with inflation, while 41% disagree.

"Consumers are still managing, but the margin for error is shrinking," said Ayesha Hatea, Director of Research and Consulting at TransUnion South Africa.

South Africans Are Cutting Back

To cope with financial pressure, many households have adjusted their spending habits. The report found that:

  • 53% have reduced spending on entertainment, dining out and travel.

  • 28% have cancelled subscriptions or memberships.

  • 24% have reduced spending on internet, television or other digital services.

Some consumers are also taking steps to strengthen their finances.

Around 32% said they are paying off debt faster, while 27% are saving more through emergency funds or stokvels.

However, the study also found signs of financial strain, with some households increasing their use of credit or withdrawing retirement savings to cover daily expenses.

Looking Ahead

The report suggests that financial pressure is likely to continue over the coming months.

Many South Africans expect spending on bills, loan repayments and healthcare to increase, making careful budgeting more important than ever.

Financial experts say households should continue monitoring their expenses, avoid unnecessary debt where possible and build emergency savings to improve their financial resilience during uncertain economic times.
