As South Africans prepare to mark Men's Grooming Day on 21 August, experts are encouraging men to view grooming as more than just looking good, it is also an important part of maintaining physical and mental wellbeing.
In today's fast-paced world, many men spend their time balancing work, family responsibilities and financial pressures, often leaving little time to focus on themselves.
According to Themba Ndlovu, Brand Manager for Clere For Men, modern grooming is increasingly becoming part of a broader self-care routine that helps men recharge and perform at their best.
"Modern grooming is less about appearances and more about creating simple routines that help men feel refreshed, comfortable and ready for whatever comes next," he said.
Experts say small daily habits can make a noticeable difference to both physical and mental wellbeing.
These include:
Create a healthy transition between work and home. A short walk, exercise session or quiet moment after work can help separate the pressures of the day from personal time.
Take time to unwind. Instead of rushing through your evening shower, use it as an opportunity to relax and reset.
Look after your skin. Keeping your skin clean and moisturised, especially during winter, helps prevent dryness and discomfort.
Make time for activities you enjoy. Reading, listening to music, spending time outdoors or simply switching off from technology can help reduce stress.
Build simple habits. Consistency is often more effective than trying to make dramatic lifestyle changes.
Looking After Yourself Isn't a Luxury
As conversations around men's mental health continue to grow, Men's Grooming Day serves as a reminder that self-care is not about vanity, it is about maintaining good health, reducing stress and creating healthy routines that support overall wellbeing.
Whether it's taking a few extra minutes to unwind after work or developing a consistent grooming routine, small daily habits can make a meaningful difference over time.
