Chronic diseases on the rise in South Africa: Why prevention matters now more than ever

Chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, cancer and chronic respiratory illnesses are becoming an increasing concern in South Africa, highlighting the urgent need for healthier lifestyles and regular medical check-ups.

New data released by Bestmed Medical Scheme shows the growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), which are responsible for around 74% of deaths globally. In South Africa, nearly 30% of adults are living with hypertension, one of the leading risk factors for heart disease and stroke.

The findings also reveal the impact of chronic illnesses among members enrolled on Bestmed’s chronic disease programme. According to the data:

  • 42% are living with at least one chronic condition.

  • 24.6% are managing two chronic conditions.

  • 16.6% are living with three or more chronic illnesses.

These figures reinforce the importance of preventing illness before it develops into a more serious health condition.

Medical experts say chronic diseases often develop gradually and may not show symptoms until complications arise. This is why regular health screenings are essential, as they help identify health risks early, allowing treatment to begin before serious complications occur.

Simple lifestyle changes can significantly reduce the risk of developing many chronic diseases. Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly, maintaining a healthy weight, managing stress, avoiding tobacco products and limiting alcohol consumption all contribute to better long-term health.

For people already living with chronic illnesses, routine medical check-ups and following prescribed treatment plans remain essential. Ongoing monitoring can improve symptom control, reduce hospital admissions and help individuals maintain their independence and quality of life.

Beyond improving individual health, prevention also benefits communities by reducing pressure on South Africa’s healthcare system and lowering the costs associated with treating preventable diseases.

Health experts continue to encourage South Africans not to wait until they feel unwell before seeking medical advice. Regular screenings and informed lifestyle choices remain some of the most effective ways to prevent chronic diseases and improve overall wellbeing.

Kasi Connect Tip:

You don’t need to wait until you’re sick to visit a clinic. Most public healthcare facilities offer free blood pressure checks and can screen for conditions such as diabetes. Early detection can help prevent serious complications and save lives.
